| Wolfsburg captured their first Bundesliga championship today
with another thrilling attacking display against Werder Bremen to
finish the season undefeated at home.
Zvjezdan Misimovic opened the scoring after just six minutes for
Felix Magath's side, who needed a win to completely guarantee the
title.
Brazilian forward Grafite doubled the lead in the 15th minute,
and Sebastian Prodl's own goal 11 minutes later made it 3-0.
Diego got Bremen on the board in the 31st minute, but Grafite made
it 4-1 in the 56th minute for his 28th goal of the campaign to finish
as the Bundesliga's top scorer and his Bosnian strike partner Edin
Dzeko struck his 26th of the season with just over 15 minutes left.
The combined 54 goals by Grafite and Dzeko set a Bundesliga record
for goals in a season, eclipsing the mark of 53 from Gerd Muller
and Uli Hoeness for Bayern Munich in the 1971-72 and 1972-73 seasons.
Wolfsburg collected their 15th straight victory at home and finished
the campaign with 16 wins and one draw from their 17 league games
at the Volkswagen Arena this season.
Magath's team finished the season with 69 points, two points more
than Bayern Munich, who will join Wolfsburg in the Champions League
next season.
Bremen, meanwhile, ended a nightmare domestic season in 10th place
with 45 points. Thomas Schaaf's team, which suffered defeat to Shakhtar
Donetsk in the UEFA Cup final in midweek, can still salvage one
title next weekend in the German Cup final.
