Real Madrid suffered a sorry end to their home campaign after slumping
to a disappointing defeat against Real Mallorca tonight.
Juande Ramos side's season has petered out alarmingly of late to fall
out of the title race and this defeat, their fourth on the spin, was
greeted by boos from a sparse crowd at the Bernabeu.
Gonzalo Higuain had put Madrid ahead after 20 minutes but from
then on their was little to enthuse the home fans.
Five minutes later Mallorca, who had little to play for themselves
in mid-table, found an equaliser through Juan Arango, before second-half
goals from Cleber Santana and Alhassane Keita inflicted another
defeat on Madrid.
This corresponding fixture two years ago produced one of the most
unforgettable nights in Madrid's recent history.
Needing a final-day win to guarantee themselves a first Primera
Division title in four years, Madrid bounced back from a half-time
deficit against Mallorca to win 3-1 and spark off delirious celebrations
at a jam-packed Bernabeu.
Tonight's fare could hardly have been more different. The Bernabeu
was barely half-full and those fans who did turn up did not like
what they saw.
