Borussia Dortmund moved up to second in the Bundesliga with victory
at Werder Bremen on Friday night.
Ivan Perisic opened the scoring for the visitors the 43rd minute
only to be sent off two minutes into the second half.
But the 10 men sealed the win with a second goal from Patrick Owomoyela
in the 73rd minute as Bremen dropped to fourth.
There was a bright opening to the game with both sides looking
to attack.
Mario Gotze started and was then of the end of a dangerous move
in the 24th minute, first feeding Robert Lewandowski on the right
wing and then meeting the Pole's cross with a shot just wide of
the left-hand post.
Moments later, Markus Rosenberg went even closer with a shot narrowly
wide of the right-hand post at the other end.
Rosenberg then spurned an easier chance, his control letting him
down as he latched onto Aaron Hunt's pass with only Roman Weidenfeller
to beat.
Perisic put the visitors in front two minutes before the interval
when he received the ball from Sven Bender, made room for the shot
and fired it into the roof of the net.
His joy was shortlived, though, as he saw red two minutes after
the break.
Perisic went in hard on Sokratis Papastathopoulos and was shown
a second yellow card.
Bremen grew in confidence with the extra man and Claudio Pizarro
started to get more of the ball in attack.
They almost levelled in the 66th minute when Lukas Schmitz's free-kick
took a deflection off Owomoyela and hit the bar.
Dortmund were forced to play on the counter attack, and one earned
them a corner in the 72nd minute.
Bremen were unable to clear their lines and the ball found its
way to Owomoyela, who scored against his former club from close
range.
Lewandowski missed the chance to make it three late on when he
took the ball around Sebastian Mielitz, but could not cut it home
from a tight angle.
