Skillful and genius, Zola was in the unique position to play substitute
to the legendary Diego Maradona in Napoli. After winning the Scudetto
in his first season in the top flight, Zola gained a personal career
boost the following spring as Maradona left Naples, handing over the
coveted No 10 shirt. Zola did well in Naples, scoring 32 goals in
his four seasons.
In 1996, Zola joined the Premier League football club Chelsea. He
won the FA Cup with Chelsea and was voted the English Football Writers'
Player of the Year in 1997: the only player ever to receive the accolade
without playing an entire season. Then, he helped Chelsea win the
English League Cup, European Cup Winners' Cup and Super Cup in 1998
and the FA Cup again in 2000.
In early 2003, he was voted as the Best Loved Chelsea Player Ever
by fans after leaving Chelsea to joined Cagliari, a club from his
native Sardinia. He decided to end his football career with Cagliari.
