Where better to stage
the biggest UEFA European Championship finals to date than in
the country which gave the world the game? Sixteen nations converged
on England in the summer of 1996, but while the people celebrated
football "coming home" it was their old rivals Germany
who took the spoils after knocking out the hosts in a semi-final
penalty shoot-out before overcoming the Czech Republic.
More than 76,000 spectators streamed into Wembley stadium to see
Germany contest their fifth continental final. Their last had
ended in a shock loss to Denmark 1992 and a repeat looked feasible
when Patrik Berger's penalty gave the Czech Republic the lead.
But Germany coach Berti Vogts sent on Oliver Bierhoff and, after
heading an equaliser, he struck once more four minutes into extra
time.
