West Germany passed their toughest test on the route to the trophy.

Jurgen Klinsmann and Andreas Brehme, West Germany had enjoyed
'home advantage' at the San Siro in their first five fixtures,
including an impressive 4-1 success against Yugoslavia and a second-round
defeat of a Netherlands side. In
the Semi-final they beat England, which were driven by the skills
and exuberance of Paul Gascoigne, in a captivating contest settled
by penalties. Brehme's 85 th-minute penalty decided the Final
against Argentina and when Lothar Matthaus lifted the FIFA World
Cup trophy, Germany now joined Italy and Brazil as the football
world's most successful nations.
