| For the first time in 16 years, the tournament returned to South
America. World Cup 1978 has 16 teams qualified, divided into four
groups of four. Argentina's coach Cesar Luis Menotti could count
on the talents of skipper Daniel Passarella, midfield playmaker
Osvaldo Ardiles, striker Kempes and keeper Ubaldo Fillol. He even
had the luxury of leaving 17-year-old Diego Maradona out of his
final 22-man squad.
Holland had led the calls for a boycott but they would still have
to do without Johan Cruyff. West Germany, similarly, were without
Beckenbauer and were a shadow of the side that had won in 1974 while
the French team featuring a young Michel Platini.
This is one of the most exciting soccer tournament. All of passion
and excitement was shown from the beginning to the final that Argentina
beat the Netherlands 3-1 after extra time in the final and made
Netherlands lost their second World Cup final in a row, both times
to the host nation, after already bowing to Germany in 1974. Mario
Kempes of Argentina lead the competition in scoring with six goals.
Enjoy all again in this exceptional classic VCD.
