The first semi-final between France and Portugal is often considered
one of the best matches in the history of the European Championship.
A classic. The most vivid match in the history of the finals. In some
ways it resembled the famous FIFA World Cup semi-final between Italy
and the Federal Republic of Germany in 1970: one team holding a lead
for much of the match, a late equaliser, goals and bitten nails in
extra time. At the Stade Vélodrome in Marseilles, the spectators
witnessed one of the great moments of football, one of those matches
that is not forgotten.
Jean-François Domergue opened the scoring for France but Portugal
equalized through Rui Jordão on 74 minutes. The game went to
extra time. France led for most of the match but Jordão scored
again in the 98th minute to give the Portuguese a shock lead. The
French, who had missed numerous chances, restored parity with Jean-Francois
Domergue's second goal of the match.
Portugal were hanging on for penalties now, but France made one last
attempt to win it in open play. When Jean Tigana's pass was blocked,
he won the ball back and emptied his lungs to beat a man to the right-hand
goal line. When his low cross cut out Bento it was coolly stopped
by Platini, who scored his 8th goal of the tournament to give France
a memorable 3-2 victory.
The sight of Platini running along the touchline with his arms out
and a sea of French flags flying in the crowd behind him was the image
of the tournament. Great honour in defeat for Portugal, but no one
could begrudge that French midfield its greatest day, especially Platini
and the unquenchable Tigana, who made the winner on his 29th birthday.
